RABIES

Why should I check that my animal is protected against rabies?

In France, not a single case of human rabies caught on French territory has been reported since 1924, 20 human cases caught outside French territory were reported and 22 cases of animals imported illegally since 1970.

IMPORTANT: the results are sent by email within approximitly 8 to 10 business days after receipt in the laboratory.

You will always receive a confirmation by email when your sample is received at the laboratory. The period of 8 to 10 working days must be calculated from this date.

It is necessary to anticipate your request according to the date of your departure.

WARNING: IT IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL TO RESPECT THE TIME LIMITS!

Titration performed on a blood sample must be performed at least 30 days after the last valid vaccination.

If the domestic carnivore was born, or lived more than six months in a third country not free from rabies, blood sampling must be done at least 3 months before importation, an animal whose rabies vaccination is valid at the moment of the blood test (time> = 3 months between the date of the blood test and the date of return to the EU).

This period of three months does not apply on animals being brought back into the EU if it was born in the EU, after transit (eg holidays) in a third country not free from rabies, provided that the titration was carried out with a favorable result before it left the EU. Titration must be made before departure to countries not free from rabies to prove that the animal is well protected before entering a risk country but this titration is not required until return to the EU. For example, this is the case for a dog, born in France that goes to Morocco for a short period (<6 months) and then returns to France.

Customs' formalities

The customs’ services will verify compliance with all the cumulative sanitary conditions imposed by Regulation (EC) No 998/2003 of 26 May 2003.

Third countries exempt from the rabies titre

Animals from countries listed in Regulation (EU) No 576/2013 - Annex II - part 2, are exempt from serum titration to enter the EU

Descripton of analyses performed by the laboratory

Research and neutralizing antibody titration against the Lyssavirus rabies in domestic carnivores’ serum to estimate the effectiveness of the response of the rabies vaccine (humoral immunity).

Technique used: FAVN (Fluorescent Antibody Viral Neutralization)

Inovalys (formerly Departmental Laboratory of Sarthe) is approved amongst others by the European Union and Japan.

Sampling

Must be done in a veterinary practice (using a dry 5 ml tube).

The separation of the serum after exudation of the clot is strongly recommended for serological analysis by seroneutralization technique, hemolysis can produce toxic effects on the cell cultures used.

Transfer the exuded serum after the clot has retracted (centrifuge if possible) into another dry tube and place it in the refrigerator pending rapid shipment by post or courier.

Do not exceed 15 days for the sample to arrive at the laboratory, otherwise the antibody titer will decrease, which risks lowering the serum titer around the threshold of 0.5 IU / ml
